Indian tablet market soars 3.6% in Q4 2014, iBall overtakes Samsung: Report

The tablet market in India has reported quarter-on-quarter growth of 3.6%, according to a report by Research Firm IDC (International Data Corporation). A total of 0.96 million tablets were shipped in the Q4, 2014. iBall that was in the third spot, behind Micromax in Q3 2014 has jumped up to the first spot in Q4 2014 overtaking Samsung, to be come the leading tablet maker in the country in terms of shipments.

iBall grabs 15.6% market share in Q4 2014, up from 4.5% share in Q4 2013. Samsung grabs 12.9% share, compared to 17.9% share in Q4 2013. DATAWIND comes close with 9.6% share. Micromax that was in the second spot in Q3 2014 is no where to be seen in the top five spots.

Since the share of PC OEMs in the market has grown by more than double year-on-year, 2014 has posted tablet shipments of 3.5 million, down 15% compared to 2013, says IDC.  7-inch tablets under $150 (Rs. 9000 approx.) increased in the quarter and will continue to foreseeable future, says the report.

3G tablets posted a double digit growth in Q4 and accounted for about 60% of the total shipments, up from 35% in Q1 2014. Wi-Fi enabled tablets have faced a steep decline over the quarters, down from 48% in Q1 to 19% in Q4 2014 since the market it moving towards 3G. IDC expects 4G tablets to pick up as more service providers rolls out their 4G LTE services by the second half of 2015.
