Amazon working on $50 Android tablet to boost hardware adoption

Amazon Kindle Fire HD6 and HD7

While Amazon’s Fire tablets haven’t exactly set the world on fire (no pun intended!), it seems that the company hasn’t really given up on its hardware ambitions. If the latest rumors are to be believed then the Seattle based company might be working on an ultra low cost tablet.

There’s not much information around but one thing is definitely certain that the tablet will have a 6inch display. Predictably, Amazon will be cutting a lot of corners to the point that it appears that even stereo speakers might not find their way into the tablet.

Amazon currently has a $99 tablet that comes with advertisements on board. We believe that this will continue on the new low cost tablet as well. In addition to the 6 inch device, Amazon is expected to release new 8 and 10 inch tablets as well but these will follow more conventional pricing. All Amazon Fire tablets run a fork of Android called Fire OS and have Amazon’s own app store onboard. If and when the company’s budget tablet does hit the $50 mark, it would be cheaper than the cheapest Kindle and could provide a major boost to tablet adoption all around provided the experience isn’t too bad.
