Uber has inked a pact with the government of Maharashtra to create 75,000 jobs in the state. The ride hailing company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Maharashtra through the Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Department (SDED).
Under the MoU, Uber will focus on training women and people from marginalized sectors of society. The company said that the initiative is to promote an equal and fair opportunity for all sectors of society to earn sufficient fares as independent entrepreneurs on the platform. The SDED department is looking for similar deals and partnerships to increase employment potential in Maharashtra by enabling supply of skilled manpower in the desired sector, strengthening the training infrastructure related to the requisite skill set as well as by adopting new age technologies as per the demand of industries.
Shailesh Sawlani, GM, Uber West said in a statement,
We are deeply committed to the promotion of equal opportunity among all sectors of society and are happy to be part of the Make in India initiative through this MoU with the SDED, Govt. of Maharashtra to encourage and give women and persons from marginalised societies an opportunity to become micro-entrepreneurs through our platform.
Earlier this month, Uber which currently operates in 400 cities across 65 countries, revamped its look and got a new logo. The company raised $2.1 billion in December last year that values it at $62.5 billion.
