Motorola has no plans to launch a new smartwatch anytime soon. A Motorola exec has confirmed that no new smartwatch has been planned for Android Wear 2.0 release next year. This means the future of a Moto 360 successor looks doubtful.
“We don’t see enough pull from the market at this point to put out a new product. Wearables do not have broad enough appeal for us to continue to build on it year after year”, said Shakil Barkat, head of global product development at Motorola during a press event. The company had previously said that it would not release a new smartwatch in 2016. He also said that Motorola’s annual device roadmap would not contain any wearables, including smartwatches
Moto 360 remains the company’s latest wearable flagship, first released last year in September. It is expected to receive an update to the new software, but the original model launched in 2014 will not. Google has already delayed the release of Android Wear 2.0 until early 2017. The company is expected to be working on two new smartwatches that will be announced with the latest Android Wear OS.
