HP just announced its intentions to open source the much loved Web OS. The OS which was popular for its elegant multitasking and data handling had almost been killed due to poor sales of smartphone hardware.
CEO Meg Whitman today announced that the OS will live on in the open source community with commitment from HP as well. The company will not be manufacturing more smartphone hardware but the OS will be available for licensing by other manufacturers. Interestingly the company also has tentative plans to make tablet hardware in 2012 – 2013 if the market is viable.
