Sony Corporation today reported net loss of 19.3 billion yen ($196.65 million) for its second quarter that ended September 30th 2013. Even though it posted a loss, it reported strong smartphones sales in the quarter, which increased 39.3 percent compared to Q2 2012. Even though it is not in the top 5 list of smartphone vendors by shipments as reported by IDC recently, Sony has reported that they have sold 10 million smartphones in the quarter, which is about 0.4 million units more than the last quarter.
Here is the consolidated Q2 results by different segments. As you can see, the mobile phone and communication sector alone accounted for 418.6 billion yen in the quarter, compared to 389.0 billion yen in Q1 2013, and 300.4 billion yen in Q2 2012.
As you can see in the first half of the financial results by segment, the mobile phone and communication sector has accounted for 807.5 billion yen in the firs half of the 2013, compared to 586.0 billion yen in 1H 2012.
The average selling price of the smartphone is also one of the main reason for the increase in sales, says Sony. Introduction of smartphones such as the Xperia Z improved the sales in the first quarter, this year the Xperia Z1 that was launched in September 2013 paved way for the increase in sales in the high-end segment. Sony expects the sales and profit to remain strong even in its current quarter.
