Ranbir Kapoor, the critically acclaimed Bollywood actor slash rom-com hero, who incidentally used to be the brand ambassador for Lenovo’s PC products, will now promote the company’s smartphones too. As the company slowly moves away from its focus on PCs to Smartphones, Ranbir Kapoor too will move along to promote the Chinese company’s smartphones as well as tablets in India. The deal includes TV commercials, online advertising and so forth, which will eventually be released in some time to the Indian media.
Lenovo has been swiftly moving into the Indian market with various launches over the year, the highlights being K900 and the Vibe Z, the company’s latest flagship smartphone. The company caught a lot of eyeballs when it announced it will be acquiring Motorola Mobility from Google, which indirectly puts it in the business of smartwatches too, after the Moto 360 announcement. The deal is yet to go through, but the firm has been aggressively advancing in all the markets it can, and will hopefully have a better impact with the Motorola brand name in some countries. Part of the advancement is pushing a wide portfolio of devices to many markets, including India, where Lenovo now sells all over, not just limited to South India, which was initially the target market.
Most Indian companies have their own Bollywood endorsement, which resonates with the large movie-going crowd in India, and hence the paying crowd that buys smartphones. We saw new companies like Oppo hiring Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor as its choice of stars and stalwarts like Nokia and Samsung opting for huge stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan respectively. Here, Lenovo’s choice, even if it was already chosen, might vibe with the youngsters, who are the typical users that a new entrant into the market wants to attract. Also, we feel that Ranbir Kapoor makes a good Indian counterpart to Lenovo’s global ambassador. This being one of the many associations that is currently going on, we will keep an eye out for more information. Until then, get ready to watch Ranbir Kapoor flaunting the Lenovo Vibe Z on your TVs soon.
