Samsung and Apple are still the leading smartphone vendors by shipments in Q1 2014, according to a report by Research Firm IDC (International Data Corporation). The worldwide smartphone market grew 28.6% year-over-year in the Q1 2014, with shipments of 281.5 million units in the quarter, down 2.8% compared to last quarter.
Samsung shipped 85 million smartphones in Q1 2014 and has 30.2% market share globally. Apple shipped 43.7 million units of iPhones in the same quarter, up 16.8% YoY. Both these companies lost some market share in the quarter to other competitors, compared to Q3 2013. The top five positions are the same compared to the previous quarter. Lenovo has the best YoY change with 63.3% increase in market share. It currently has 4.6% market share globally. Huawei has posted 47.3% YoY change and is placed just above Lenovo with 4.9% global market share.
As we know LG shipped 12.3 million smartphones in the quarter, about 0.9 million less than the previous quarter, but it managed to grab 4.4% global market share with strong sales of LTE-powered smartphones, including the G2, Nexus 5 in the quarter, pushing Coolpad, Xiaomi, and ZTE behind. Recently Motorola announced that it shipped 6.5 million smartphones in the Q1 2014, it might soon catch up with others if they plan to launch more smartphones at competitive price tag.
Looking at the global mobile phone shipments, Samsung is still at the top with 24.3% market share. Nokia is at the second spot with 11.3% share, but it is down from 13% in last quarter. The company continues to push out affordable feature phones. Over 1 billion smartphones were shipped in 2013, IDC expects 1.2 billion shipments in 2014
