Samsung sold half million smartwatches, grabs 71% market in Q1 2014

Samsung has shipped more than 5,00,000 smartwatches in first quarter of 2014, according to latest report from Strategy Analytics. The South Korean giant has emerged as a leader with by grabbing 71 percent of the global smartwatch market, up from 52.4% in 2013.

Compared to last year, Samsung sold roughly 1 million smartwatches over the course of four quarters. It must be noted that these are the number of devices that are up for sale and not which are actually bought by the users. Also, shipments of the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit watches are not counted in these numbers, as these devices went on sale in April. This means, the company sold half million original Galaxy Gear smartwatches. Samsung will soon give Gear smartwatches Tizen update

Sony’s Smartwatch and the Pebble from U.S.-based Pebble Technology sold 80,000 units to take 11.4 percent of the market each. Motorola and Qualcomm each claimed 1.4 percent, selling 10,000 units.

Samsung’s dominance in the smartwatch market could be short lived as it will soon face tough competition from Android Wear powered pairing of the LG G Watch and Motorola Moto 360. The former is expected to launch in June while the latter is rumored to launch in July. It will be interesting to see the numbers in Q3 of 2014 when major companies will have their smartwatches for sale in the market.
