Google is reportedly working on tablet that boasts of advanced vision capabilities that can take precise 3D images of objects, according a latest report from the Wall Street Journal. As per the sources, the 7 inch tablet is based on technology developed within Project Tango which is supervised by Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group.
Announced in February this year, Project Tango is an Android platform for mobile devices designed to track 3D motion and objects, creating a map in real-time of the environment. The phone’s sensors make more than 250 million 3D measurements every second to build a 3D model of the device’s surroundings. The tablet appears to have the same or similar imaging hardware as the smartphone version, which features a regular camera mounted near the top of the handset.
The WSJ report stated that the tablet will come equipped with two rear-facing cameras, infrared depth sensors, and advanced imaging software, unidentified sources told the Journal. Google says that these sensors can be applied to tasks such as improving navigation for those who are visually impaired, providing step-by-step directions within buildings, and offer more immersive video games. The company plans to produce about 4,000 prototype tablets starting next month, ahead of its annual developer conference.
