Nokia acquires Medio Systems to boost HERE

Nokia has scooped yet another start-up to enhance its offerings for HERE Maps. The company has acquired Medio Systems, a real-time predictive analytics firm for an undisclosed sum. It will use Medio’s technology to give users of its location-based services more personalised results and maps.

The latest acquisition, comes recently from Nokia after acquiring mapping startup and app maker Desti earlier this month. Nokia HERE is expected to close the deal by end of July. According to Medio this partnership will provide services like delivering restaurant recommendations to you ahead of a lunch meeting or suggesting driving routes based on your style and real-time conditions.

We are entering the age of what I call cognitive mapping, in which maps will understand their environment and anticipate people’s intent in order to deliver interactive and smart location experiences. We plan to extend Medio’s talent and technology that analyzes millions of connected devices and billions of interactions on the go to strengthen our ability to deliver highly personalized maps and location services for whatever people face throughout their day.

said Michael Halbherr, CEO of HERE in Medio blog.

Founded in 2014, Medio has 60 employees and it mines real-time activity, then pushes it through a cloud-based predictive analytics engine to process information and turn it into actionable data. By combining that system with HERE mapping, Nokia is creating what it said is the world’s first “index of the real world.”

Nokia will also put Medio Systems’ analytics to work in its Technologies and NSN arms. With Medio, Nokia want to use its predictive engine to anticipate what users are searching for and where they are going based on their past activity and stated preferences.
