Google Play Services 5.0 brings Android Wear support and more

Google has announced a major update to Google Play Services to all the Android devices worldwide. The 5.0 update to Google Play Services brings support to Android Wear. This will bring new APIs that will let developers connect their apps to wearable devices running Android Wear. It will also allow them to easily sync information between their phone apps and wearable devices.

This release introduces Android wearable services APIs, Dynamic Security Provider and App Indexing, whilst also including updates to the Google Play game services, Cast, Drive, Wallet, Analytics, and Mobile Ads.

The update includes security fixes, as well as APIs that make it easier for Google’s search app to link to information within apps. Google Play Services 5.0 also provides a dynamic security provider, which is a replacement of the secure networking APIs. This will allow Google to update security patches more rapidly. Also, Google Play Games will get Quests, which will reward players without the need to update the game, and users will also get the ability save game progress. In addition, users can pause a game on one device and resume where you left of on another.

By updating Google Play Services, Google is effectively adding new features to all Android phones and tablets, regardless of the version of Android they run. The update will download automatically and users will not need to download it manually.
