Twitter buys password security start-up Mitro

Twitter has acquired password security firm Mitro for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 2012, Mitro’s primary product is a web browser extension that allowed users to store and share passwords.

Mitro is a secure password manager that lets users share password information within specified groups. The software uses encryption to ensure passwords stay safe. It will join Twitter and will focus on variety of geo-related projects as a result of the acquisition.

“We’ve been working hard to build a secure, easy-to-use password manager for individuals and groups. We’ve made great progress and we believe that the community can help us accomplish even more”

said Mitro in a company blog post.

Mitro also announced that it is releasing its “server and client code” on Github for others to build upon. Twitter added two-factor authentication, similar to Google and Facebook last year in May. The latest acquisition comes a month after it bought mobile ad start-up Tap Commerce.
