$129 Omate X smartwatch takes the companion route after going indie

Omate got some rave reviews after launching their first ever smartwatch, the Truesmart. The crowd-funded project went live last year, and the smartwatch won a lot of fans thanks to the high value proposition it brought on board.

The $299 smartwatch could not only pair up with your existing smartphone to act as a wearable notification system, but could also make calls without having to depend on another smartphone, thereby acting as a wearable phone, something which wasn’t as common back in 2013 as it is today.

However, the pricing meant that it wasn’t affordable to all. Thus born was the Omate X, the Shenzhen-based company’s latest smartwatch launch. At just $129, the Omate X costs less than half when compared to its predecessor. Of course, there are a few corners cut which include the lack of a cellular modem (no SIM support) and no Android Wear.

According to Omate, the company is working on bringing voice support to the Omate X. Meanwhile, the smartwatch will pair with smartphones running on iOS 6+ and Android v4.3+ to provide notification access right on your wrist.

Omate will be accepting pre-orders through the whole of September, with shipping slated to commence the following month.
