Android Wear to get GPS, offline music playback and custom watch faces later this year

Google is adding a slew of new and exciting feature to Android Wear later this year. Recently released and new Android Wear powered smartwatches are going to receive these updates soon.

For starters, the company is bringing offline music playback for locally stored files with the help of Bluetooth headphones. Moving on, the Android smartwatches will get GPS support that will enable you to go off and run with an exercise tracking app and get a map of your route. Finally, Google is bringing downloadable watch faces in this app in order to let users customize the visual design of the watch’s home screen and organize their apps as they see fit. Google said that users can add most used apps like calender or fitness sensors on the main screen. The watch faces will be made available in the Google Play Store.

“Our goal with Wear is to build technology that helps you connect with others and get stuff done. So often, technology can become something that gets in the way of everything else. But we want to build devices that you can use when you need and forget about when you don’t—technology that’s built for your sake, rather than its own sake. Coming throughout the rest of this year, we’re making some updates to Wear that will help you get even more out of your watch—and the rest of your life, too.”

posted David Singleton, Engineering Director, Android Wear, on company blog post.

The number of Android Wear smartwatches are increasing by day. Just yesterday, Motorola announced the Moto 360 while Sony launched the SmartWatch 3 and Asus debuted Zen Watch. While LG introduced the circular G watch R.
