The Nokia Lumia 530 – available for under £100 with a stellar specs list, this Windows Phone smartphone can do a lot but surviving our stress test is not one of them.
Having been subjected to both ends of our friendly hammer followed by a few chance meetings with a concrete floor, the Lumia 530 arrives at the scene of the third test damaged and bruised.
Chances are the third test won’t feel any nicer as we’re about to introduce the handset to our car.
Will it crush into hundreds of pieces and be completely unrecognisable or will it withstand the onslaught and stand up tall? Let’s find out..

So the Lumia 530 does neither – it’s not fully working (and even if it was, the screen is already past the point of no repair) but it’s still somewhat recognisable for what it is. This was only one example of how it may fall under the wheels of a car and more likely, the handset will drop and be run over by a car at much higher speeds.
Nonetheless it does survive – the screen was even more damaged than before we began so it’s quite likely a non damaged display would have shattered whilst being run over. The rear cover is interesting – the significant dents on our model came from the concrete finish and uneven texture of the floor – if the handset was on a flat surface like tarmac, there’s a chance the back cover would have had minimal damage. Luckily with the 530, you can change covers so it’s easy to replace a damaged rear.
Here’s the Lumia 530 at the end of the stress tests:
Looking at all the stress tests as a whole, the main conclusion is that the Lumia 530 can’t withstand some impact and had we run the Hammer Test last, the handset may have survived being dropped and run over. The other conclusion is much simpler – the Lumia 530 (and most probably all smartphones) does not like our friendly hammer.
Special thanks to the MixRadio team for lending us the Lumia 530.
