Samsung to reportedly launch Tizen powered smartphone in India by December

Looks like Samsung is taking its time more time to launch smartphones based on its homegrown operating system Tizen in India. A report from the Economic Times is claiming that the South Korean electronic major will launch Tizen powered smartphones in the country by December this year.

An earlier ET report in September said that the Tizen powered smartphone will hit Indian markets by November. The latest one states that as per its sources, the smartphone from Samsung will likely have a 4-inch screen and dual-SIMs with a 3.2 megapixel camera and 512 MB RAM. The smartphone based on Tizen OS will most likely be priced between Rs 5,000 – Rs 15,000.

The news comes at a time when Samsung is feeling the threat from newer entries like Xiaomi who has gained immense popularity thanks to its Mi devices. In addition to the increasing competition, the company’a sales have also been affected and it posted its smallest quarterly earnings for more than two years during the just-ended July-September period.

Tizen is Samsung’s initiative to reduce its dependence on Google and carve out a niche for itself in mobile software and services. It is touted that the Tizen powered smartphone will compete with Google’s recently launched Android One initiative.
