Google is planning to bring an important update to its Translate app for Android that will allow it to auto-recognize languages and translate them into text in real time, according to a latest report from New York Times.
The feature looks similar to Skype’s real time translator preview for Windows 8.1 that was announced in December last year. Google Translate currently offers text translation for about 90 languages, including English, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Russian and Spanish, and voice translation for just a few of them. As per the report, the app will also gain the ability to use the camera to translate foreign signs in the real world. This would help users and especially travelers to take snapshot of signs and menu cards in foreign land.
Last month, a report stated that Google Translate’s next update would bring WordLens integration and conversation mode. The latest report seconds the possibility of an update that will compete with Skype’s newly added feature which currently supports translation only from English to Spanish and vice versa. Whether Google Translate’s update will allow real time translation in all the 90 languages it supports, remains to be seen.
