Inventec to kickstart production in Chennai, might build Xiaomi devices


Inventec, a major Taiwanese supplier of Chinese phone brand Xiaomi will begin mass production at a new factory in India, according to a report from Digitimes.

The company will set up a plant in Chennai during the second half of 2015 as part of its overseas expansion. It will start the production in Q2 or Q3 of 2015, said the report. Inventec has not yet revealed what kind of devices will be manufactured at the Chennai factory. However, the report citing industry sources said that it will likely start bulding Xiaomi devices but their is no official word from the Chinese smartphone maker regarding the same. Last month it was reported that Xiaomi will set up R&D unit in Bangalore, India.

Invetec expects shipments of ODM/OEM devices to reach 100 million units in 2015, up 33% from 75 million units shipped a year earlier, as per company chairman Richard Lee. He added that smartphones shipments are expected to rise from 55 million units to 60 million units in 2015. India is an important market for Xiaomi as the smartphone from the company have been a hit in the country.
