ARM has acquired Offspark, a specialist in security software for the Internet of Things. The popular chipmaker has made the acquisition to improve its security credentials for IoT offerings.
The financial terms of the deal are not disclosed. Dutch based company, Offspark, specializes in IoT communications security and its PolarSSL technology which has been deployed in sensor modules and smartphones. ARM will add Offspark’s PolarSSL encryption software to its own platform. According to ARM, many of the companies making IoT equipment already use ARM processors.
“We have always said that security must be the foundation of any IoT system and the acquisition of Offspark is evidence of us making that happen. PolarSSL technology is already deployed by the leading IoT players. The fact that those same companies also utilize ARM Cortex processor and software technologies means we are now able to provide a complete bedrock solution for the industry to innovate from.”
said Krisztian Flautner, general manager, IoT business, ARM.
PolarSSL will be rebranded as mbed TLS and it will be available for standalone use and as part of mbed OS. ARM will release mbed OS under an Apache 2.0 license which will include mbed TLS, Thread and other key technologies toward the end of 2015.The release of mbed TLS 1.3.10, is now available under GPL and to existing PolarSSL customers on polarssl.org.
