Facebook has added a new feature that will keep your legacy even after your death. The social network has launched a new tool dubbed as ‘Legacy Contact’ to manage your profile page after you die.
Facebook will soon allow you to nominate someone to manage your account. This person will be able to post, manage friend requests, update the cover and profile photos and archive content on the behalf of the deceased. However, they won’t be able to log in as you or view your personal messages. If you want your profile deleted, the company will honor that request and remove your photos, Timeline and past likes and comments.
“By talking to people who have experienced loss, we realized there is more we can do to support those who are grieving and those who want a say in what happens to their account after death”
posted Facebook on a company blog.
Facebook also redesigned memorial profiles by adding the word “Remembering” above the deceased’s name and will allow a legacy contact to pin a post to the top of their timeline. The optional feature is rolling out slowly to U.S. residents first, before expanding to more countries. Prior to this feature.
To set up a legacy contact, users will need to go to Security and click on “Legacy Contact,” and select one of your Facebook friends. You will also be given the option to send them a pre-written message (which you can edit) that provides information about the policy. Facebook provided a process to freeze accounts after death, but there was no way to set them up to be managed by someone else or automatically deleted.
