Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6 was officially unveiled at the on-going Mobile World Congress 2015. Soon after the announcement, we had a chance to play with the device for some time and here’s our hands-on story.
Samsung has finally heard to its consumer’s plea and has significantly re-designed its newest Galaxy S smartphone. The sixth generation Galaxy S device now feels impressive in the hands – thanks to the combination of glass and metal that it comes with.
Samsung Galaxy S6 measures 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8mm and weighs about 138 grams.
The Galaxy S5 sports a 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display and right outset the screen looks gorgeous and the colors are vibrant. The panel offers great viewing angles and the galactic contrast.
Samsung Galaxy S6 packs a punch with its 64-bit Exynos 7420 chipset with quad-core 2.1GHz and quad-core 1.5GHz CPU. The 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM meant that the multi-tasking was hassle free and we can confirm that. The unit that we handled was a 32GB model, but there’s also a 64GB and 128GB variants.
The rear of the phone features a 16 megapixel f/1.9 camera and it has the ability to record 4K videos. The snapper has optical image stabilization, so you can expect the camera to perform well in low light conditions. We would like to bring it to your notice that the shooter protrudes a bit. The snapper has a cool new feature that we like – double tapping on the home key activates the camera in about sever tenth of a second!
On the front, there’s an array of sensors above of the display along with the earpiece and 5 megapixel f/1.9 camera.
Samsung has redesigned its proprietary home button to accommodate its new fingerprint sensor. The working of this security feature has gotten a lot better as compared to what the previous generation Galaxy S offered and we can safely say that it is now capable of rubbing its shoulders against Apple’s TouchID.
The South Korean manufacturer has also enhanced the speaker performance of the Galaxy S6. The new model is about 50% louder and offers a much better experience.
There’s nothing much to write the user interface as the Galaxy S6 comes with a layer of TouchWiz – something that we are already familiar with. Samsung custom UI is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Unfortunately, the new design also comes with some trade-off. The back panel on the Galaxy S6 is non-removable and this also means that the battery is no longer user-replaceable. And, there’s no space for the microSD card slot.
Samsung Galaxy S6 will be up for grabs in four color options – white pearl, black sapphire, gold platinum and blue topaz. The device will be available starting April 10.
