The beginning of the end of rear camera selfies

Front facing cameras have been here for a long time. Primarily used for video calling, the sensors never reached more than 2 megapixels, even when the rear cameras had reached a maximum of 41 Megapixels. But things are changing. Nowadays, bigger front facing cameras have auto focus and are starting to be as good as the ones at the back. All thanks to Selfies.

Social media has changed the way we share pictures and selfies are now mainstream. In fact, technology, as mentioned earlier, didn’t catch up. People were taking selfies, more of them with rear facing cameras. There were several reasons for that. The rear facing cameras had more resolution, wider angle lenses, auto focus, if needed, and most importantly, good quality output.

The front facing cameras couldn’t match them because of various constraints like size, thickness, and to an extent, even the bill of materials. But not anymore, because the camera sensors have gotten smaller, thinner and way cheaper than before so that manufacturers can now use high quality units even at the front, and that’s what’s happening right now. Most phones now come with a minimum 5 megapixels at the front, with the higher end models opting for faster lenses and auto focus. But with the mid range becoming good enough, more innovation on the front camera is now being seen at the lower end. Case in point, the recently launched Micromax Canvas Selfie.

It has the same 13 megapixel sensor and lens combination at the back and at the front, and even throws in a soft flash for the front facing unit. Considering that the device is priced at Rs. 15,999, the usage of the same sensor and lens as the rear camera makes it the USP. You even get a dedicated camera button that’s designed to be accessible for, you guessed it right, Selfies.

So, with phones like the Micromax Canvas Selfie and some others, it is safe to say that the end is near for painstakingly created rear camera selfies. But this is only the beginning of that end. There is a lot more to come, so stay tuned to find out more on the Canvas Selfie.
