Idea, Airtel, Vodafone and others win spectrum as auction raises Rs. 1.10 lakh crore

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has announced the winners in the spectrum auctions in various circles that ended after 115 rounds. At the end of the auction for 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz government got bids worth Rs 1.098 lakh crore. Idea Cellular bid a maximum of Rs. 30,306.98 crore, Airtel bid Rs. 29,130.20 crore and Vodafone bid Rs. 29,959.74 crore to buy spectrum in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2,100 MHz bands.

Reliance Jio bid for Rs. 10,077.53 crore and Reliance Communication bid for Rs. 4,299.13 crore to buy spectrum in 800 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. Tata Teleservices bid Rs. 7,851.33 crore to buy spectrum in 800 MHz and 1800 MHz and Aircel bid for Rs.2,250 crore for spectrum in 1800 MHz band in Tamil Nadu.

Idea Cellular said that it will further expand its 3G Services to 13 circles covering 80% of its overall revenue and enable 4G roll out on 1800 MHz in 10 Service Areas covering 61% of Idea’s gross revenue. The 9 MHz spectrum won in Maharashtra will enable Idea to deploy 3G services on 900 MHz (in addition to the existing 2100 MHz band), said the company. It will likely to pay Rs. 7,732 crores as upfront payment, and the remaining amount in 10 equal annual installments starting after a moratorium of 2 years.

Reliance Jio will pay upfront payment of Rs. 2,695.48 crore. Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited said:

Jio’s seamless 4G services using proven multi-band LTE technology and supported by our large spectrum footprint will provide superior user experience for voice, video and data services in line with the best service providers in the world.

RCOM invested nearly 50 per cent of its total outlay on 800/850 MHz band in 11 Circles to achieve contiguous 5 MHz spectrum holding nationwide. It holds 3G and CDMA spectrum in all 7 circles, with legacy 2G spectrum expiring in Dec 2015. It has also re-acquired spectrum in 900/1800 bands in 4 of the 7 2G spectrum expiry circles. The company said that it will accelerate transition of 2G customers in remaining 3 circles to 3G before Dec 2015. It will pay upfront payment of Rs. 1,106 crore.
