Nokia denies planning return to phone market

We reported a few days back that Nokia is planning to re-enter the phone market sometime in 2016. Now Nokia has issued a statement in China stating that all such claims are false.

Nokia said that it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell handsets. But Nokia did say that they are looking to return into the smartphone market by brand licensing. Nokia already did so with the Tablet N1 which was produced under license by Foxconn but is available only in China at the moment. Nokia are likely to follow the same route if they start making phones in the future.

While Nokia and Microsoft have a deal where Nokia aren’t allowed to enter the smartphone business until 2016, they are free to do so after said period. Sebastian Nystrom (Head of Products at Nokia Technologues) said “It would be crazy not to look at that opportunity. Of course we will look at it.” last November.
