Google Play Newsstand update brings smarter recommendations and more

Google on Tuesday started rolling out the updated Play Newsstand app for Android devices. The update brings overall performance and UI improvements, more articles from the sources, smarter recommendations, bug fixes and more.

While app’s official changelog on Google Play only briefs general changes in What’s New section, the folks over Android Police detailed changes that are hidden and may come with future updates.

First up is the revamped navigation drawer on the left, which gets a bigger account banner image as already seen in other updated Google apps.

There is also a new checkmark icon in the Read Now section, which lets users unsubscribe topics from the subscriptions list with a single tap. It replaces an option in the overflow menu previously titled Remove topic.

Some hidden strings found in the teardown reveal that company is looking about the idea to make interaction with publishers, though nothing is known about it as yet. Additionally, Google is also adding (or moving) the verification process for existing magazine customers directly into the Newsstand app, notes Android Police.

Lastly, the app teardown also revealed that Google is considering advertisements inside of content shown in Newsstand.
