Sony Corporation has reported its revenues for fourth quarter of the financial year 2014 and the full year that ended March 31, 2015. Sales increased to 1,937.7 billion yen ( US$ 16,148 million), an increase of 3.6% in Q4 14 compared to the same quarter last year. Sales for the whole financial year 2014 increased 5.8% to 8,215.9 billion yen ( US$ 68,466 million). It shipped 7.9 million smartphones in the quarter and 39.1 million smartphones in the financial year of 2014.
The mobile communications division has reported sales of 1,323.3 billion yen (US$ (11,027 million) for the whole year, a 11% increase compared to previous year. For the quarter it reported sales of 271.6 billion yen, 1.2% increase compared to the same quarter last year.
Increase in mobile sales in the quarter and year was primarily due to an improvement in product mix and the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates. The devices sector saw an increase of 23.9% year-on-year to 957.8 billion yen(US$ 7,982 million) for the year. This significant increase was primarily due to a significant increase in sales of image sensors reflecting higher demand for mobile products, the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as a significant increase in sales of camera modules, said Sony.
Regarding the outlook for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, the mobile sales are expected decrease to 30 million units year-on-year due to a reduction in mid-range smartphone unit sales in an effort to improve the profit structure of the segment. Operating loss is expected to decrease year-on-year primarily due to the absence of the 176.0 billion yen impairment of goodwill recorded in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, an improvement in product mix, and a decrease in costs due to the benefit of restructuring, said the company.
