The publication got hold of a legal document that shows a full transfer of shares from Metaio’s holdings to Apple. German based Metaio specializes in several application related to augmented reality and computer vision solutions.  Apple confirmed the acquisition with its standard response when it buys a company. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans”.

At present, it is unclear what Apple plans to do with the acquisition. Earlier this week, a separate report from 9to5mac reported that Apple is working on adding augmented reality features to its Maps application. The feature would allow a user to point an iPhone camera down a street and it would overlay information about restaurants, cafes and other local businesses in that vicinity. Augmented reality has become an important market and hence Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft have shown interest in the field and all are working on virtual-reality products.
