Google announces new APIs for Google Cast

Google Cast helps developers to extend their mobile experiences to larger screens using devices such as Chromecast and Android TVs. Google has just announced new tools for developers to bring new app and game experiences onto TVs.

The new Google Cast Remote Display APIs for iOS and Android make it easier to bring graphic intensive apps to Google Cast receivers. Although there currently is support to cast your Android screen, the new API will allow developers to build an experience specifically make for the second screen rather than having just an identical mirrored experience. For example this would allow the user to use their entire phone screen as a controller rather than show the gameplay on both the TV as well as the phone. Remote Display will be available for both Android as well as iOS devices along with the Google Cast icon that allows you to select a device.

Autoplay and Queuing API tried to minimise the users waiting period as it starts buffering the next video slightly before the first video completes playing. Google says that this creates a continuous playback experience that can help lift per-session watch times by around 10-20%.

Finally, you have the new Game Manager API that makes it easier for developers to build multiplayer games. These new APIs are available on Android already while iOS and Chrome SDKs are expected to be available in the coming few days.
