Facebook rolls out “Facebook Lite” for emerging markets

Facebook started testing Facebook Lite, a lighter version of the social network that targets at users from developing countries which have a 2G or a slow internet connection. Today, Facebook has started rolling out Facebook Lite in all the developing countries, especially Asia.


Facebook Lite runs on Android and weighs less than 1 MB aimed at quick load and update. It has all the core features like News Feed, status updates, photos and notifications.However, it does not support data-intensive features like videos or Nearby Friends. At this point, more than a billion people around the world access Facebook on their mobile devices, the company said.

Facebook Lite is present in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. It also works on devices running Android 2.2. The app will be arriving in Latin America, Africa and Europe in the coming weeks.Facebook Lite is part of Facebook’s larger efforts to expand into the developing world. Facebook already has launched Internet.org app that gives users from developing countries free access to Web content and Facebook.
