Twitter has announced the acquisition of a Whetlab, a startup focused on machine learning technology. Whetlab confirmed the acquisition on its website while Twitter announced it via an official tweet.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Whetlab said it will shut down its service effective July 15 and its small team will also join Twitter following the acquisition. Twitter has not given much information about its plans for Whetlab and just said that Whetlab will “accelerate” its machine learning efforts.
Twitter recently introduced a new instant timeline that aims at attracting new users and also help existing ones to spend more time on the micro blogging site. Intelligent learning could also help Twitter learn more about its users through how, when, and what they tweet. Earlier this week Twitter CEO Dick Costolo stepped down and co-founder Jack Dorsey became the interim CEO. Just yesterday, Twitter bought GIF and autoplay videos to users timeline. This is Twitter’s third acquisition this year as it scooped up Indian mobile marketing start-up ZipDial in January and talent agency for internet celebrities Niche in February.
