Ever since touchscreens came along, innovative form factors have died down and most handsets have a candybar form factor. Samsung however is trying its best to keep the clamshell (flip) form factor alive as was seen with the Samsung Galaxy Golden phones. Now we have yet another new smartphone from Samsung with the model number SM-G9198 that not just revives the diminishing form factor but also packs in high end specifications.
The G9198 is powered by a Snapdragon 808 processor, the same hexa-core processor that is found on the LG G4 and is clocked in at 1.8 GHz. There are two screens – one on the outside and one inside, both of which are 3.91 inches with a resolution of 1280×768 pixels. While the resolution seems more than sufficient for a screen of the size, the size itself might be deemed too small by most people nowadays. Even Apple was forced to go bigger than 4 inches onto 4.7 and 5.5 inches respectively with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus respectively.
However, there might still be a niche market for the phone out there. The phone has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded using microSD cards. While the device is quite compact due to the form-factor, it still is quite thick especially considering the smartphones that are being released this year. It measures 119.7×66.6×16.7mm. It will come with 4G LTE connectivity and Android Lollipop 5.1.1 out of the box.
The smartphone is likely to be a China specific model just like the SM-G9808 model that it succeeds. It also has a 16 Megapixel camera at the back with an LED flash and a 5 Megapixel front facing camera.
