Apple and Samsung are in talks to adopt e-SIM technology, as per a new ET report. Both the companies are in advanced discussions with mobile carriers to help develop and implement e-SIM cards.
GSMA, the industry association which represents mobile operators worldwide might soon announce the agreement regarding e-SIM cards. The main aim of the e-SIM is to make it easier for users to switch carriers anytime without getting a new card. This will allow users to choose for the best deal at any moment or switch carriers depending on the quality of service in a specific location. The ability to switch from one carrier to other will be done via an interface on the device. Majority of the telecom operators are ready for this initiative to shift over to e-SIM, said the report. AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, Orange, Telefónica, and Vodafone are all ready to “get on board”.
GSMA told the publication that it is working on “finalizing the technical architecture that will be used in the development of an end-to-end remote SIM solution for consumer devices, with delivery anticipated by 2016.” The new “e-SIM” standard is not expected to replace the Apple SIM that could ship in the “iPhone 6s” series, added the report.
