Microsoft posted an operating loss of $2.1 billion due to the $7.6 billion write-down related to its Nokia acquisition and restructuring charges. The company sold 8.4 million Lumia phones in Q4 up from 5.8 million last year, but revenue dropped 38 percent to $748 million. Revenue for the quarter fell 5 percent, to $22.18 billion. For the full year, revenue rose to $93.58 billion from $86.83 billion. Microsoft said revenue from its devices and consumer business declined 13 percent, to $8.7 billion, in part because the licensing revenue it gets from selling its Windows operating system to PC makers declined 22 percent.

Microsoft added 3 million new consumer subscribers to Office 365 this quarter, and now counts 15.2 million total. Windows OEM revenue decreased 22% as revenue was impacted by PC market declines following the XP end-of-support refresh cycle. Surface revenue grew 117% to $888 million, driven by Surface Pro 3 and launch of the Surface 3.
