Facebook has introduced a new tool that allows celebrities and public figures to stream live video to their Facebook fans using the Facebook Mentions app.
A user will be notified in his News Feed when a video starts. Fans who have recently interacted with famous people like celebrities, musicians, politicians, sports personalities etc can also like, share and comment on the post. People watching the stream can comment live, and the people making the stream can see those comments in real time. Facebook will also archive the videos, so you can play them back if you missed them live.
Facebook said that actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, tennis star Serena Williams, country music star Luke Bryan, Brazilian footballer Ricardo Kaka, actress Ashley Tisdale, NBC journalist Lester Holt, style maven Martha Stewart and singer Michael Buble are already using the new Live feature.
Live streaming has become an important part of the internet ecosysytem with advent of apps like Meerkat and Periscope. The Live feature is only limited to celebrities for now but the social network can expand it to its more than one billion users.
