Just yesterday, Google announced that the much awaited Project Ara has been delayed till 2016 and now we get information that Google has decided to remove electropermanent magnets from it.
The update was brought to us from the official Project Ara twitter account. The tweet stated that the company did a drop test and the devices “failed” the test. This could potentially mean that the components that were held together using electropermanent magnets fell apart when the device fell down.
While it may seem like a small issue, it isn’t good if your components fly out from the device every time it falls. The mechanism is certainly easy to use and assemble onto the device’s skeleton however it definitely isn’t strong enough to hold the components together. So Google is moving forward to other techniques of holding the components together.
We aren’t sure what method they will use now onwards but we guess its something that will manage to hold all the bits and pieces together even if it does mean that its a bit harder to add and remove components.
