Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ Hands On Impressions

Samsung on Wednesday launched its Galaxy S6 Edge+ in India with a hefty price tag of Rs. 57,900. The phone is a large-screen variant of the Galaxy S6 Edge and was announced at the Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event last week. We spent some time with the device at its launch event in Delhi and here are our impressions of it.

Talking about the overall design of Galaxy S6 Edge+, it is identical to the Galaxy S6 Edge except that it is slightly taller (about 10mm) and wider (about 5mm). It packs a 5.7-inch Quad-HD (2560×1440 pixels) Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display instead of a 5.1-inch Quad-HD display. It measures 154.4×75.8×6.9mm, and weighs 153 grams.

Even with the larger display, the S6 Edge+ fits quite nicely in hands and definitely feels premium, though at the same time it does carry similar fingerprint / smudges issue from the Galaxy S6 family. We were hoping Samsung to have improved upon it this time around.

Just like the S6 Edge, the display on Edge+ is curved on both the sides and Samsung has added one more use case of the display edge with new ‘Apps edge’. It allows you to add up to 5 apps that you use frequently, and you get notified about the same in edge notifications panel. Furthermore, now you can drag the Edge screen handle to change its position on the Edge screen.

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ features a 16-megapixel rear camera with OIS (f/1.9 aperture) and a front 5-megapixel camera. We tested both the cameras and the results seemed pretty neat, even when these were transferred on to another device.

The rear camera also supports 4K video recording, but the two interesting additions we would like to check out is its inbuilt ‘Live Broadcast’ feature which allows you to directly broadcast a video on to YouTube and invite contacts to watch it at the same time, and the second feature is the ‘Video collage’ – which lets you shoot and combine four videos into one.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ is powered by an octa-core (quad 2.1GHz + quad 1.5GHz) Exynos 7420 processor and runs on Android 5.1 (Lollipop). Samsung didn’t say anything on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update timeframe, but the device will get upgraded. You should checkout our coverage on the Top 10 new features on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

For rest of the specifications, check out our launch coverage of the Galaxy S6 Edge+. The smartphone is already up for pre-booking across channels, and comes with 32GB internal storage and in Gold and Titanium silver colour options only. Samsung is also releasing few accessories for the device – Clear View cover, Clear cover, Glitter cover, Glossy cover, Wireless charging pack and the Keyboard cover (see below).

The retail unit will come bundled with the wireless / induction charging unit (worth Rs. 3,599) and the Airtel double data offer. The Keyboard will be available separately at Rs. 4,499. Samsung is also offering one time ‘Screen replacement’ for one year with nominal charges.
