Joining the bandwagon of other smartphone makers like Xiaomi and Microsoft, homegrown smartphone maker, Micromax is planning to develop its own OS, as per a latest report from the Economic Times.
In an interview with ET, Micromax Co-founder Vikas Jain mentioned company’s plan to develop its own forked version of Android. He said that the upcoming OS will include a bunch of services and apps that will run on phones, tablets, televisions and smartwatches from the company. This OS will aim to bring a differentiated experience to consumers across all platforms, including wearables. The apps and services developed for this OS will also reach the YU series of smartphones.
The company’s software team in Bengaluru is believed to be developing the forked Android OS and about 75 people in design teams have been acquired from Nokia’s R&D in Beijing, according to the report. Developers will be able to port their existing application on the new OS and other technical details of the OS will be available in the coming months. Jain stated that the first affordable smartphones with the new OS will be available by the end of this financial year. The new OS will be lead by Ashish Agarwal, that currently heads technology at Micromax.
