LINE for Android update brings low cost calling

LINE has updated its Android app that focuses more on low cost calling. The latest update that bumps the app to version 5.4 and is now available for download on the Google Play Store.

The new low cost calling service is known as Line Out and it allows users to make calls to mobiles and landlines across the globe “at competitive rates” from inside the app. LINE said that it has revamped the feature to make it easier to use. The update adds a Call Tab to the menu located at the top the of LINE app. It now sits along with Friends, Chats, Timeline, and More tabs found on the main navigation bar.

Users will have to “sync up friends’ phone numbers registered inside your phone’s contacts to make the calls to friends who aren’t using Line yet. In order to do that they will have to head to Settings > LINE Out Settings and select “Call LINE Friends From Profiles” to make calls with LINE Out directly from your friends’ LINE profiles. A built-in keypad is also accessible through an icon at the top right of the app’s home screen for users who want to dial a number “the old-fashioned way. At a time when anyone can make calls using data or WiFi, it remains to be seen how many users will actually use the Line Out service.
