Following reports in June this year, Videocon has kick started manufacturing mobile handsets at its Salt Lake unit in Kolkata. The company already has a mobile manufacturing plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
The Salt Lake unit will manufacture only feature phones at the beginning and then eventually make smartphones and tablets. The production capacity of this plant is three million units a year and Videocon has made an investment of about Rs 50 crore for the same. At present, feature phones comprises of 40% share of Videocon’s mobile phone market. Previous report had stated that the company will design phones in Shanghai and Shenzhen in China and it would start a third design center at Gurgaon. The Salt Lake unit will also manufacture mobile handsets of other companies in the future.
Xiaomi, Vivo, HTC, Sony, Microsoft, LG, Motorola, Asus, Micromax, Celkon and Karbonn are some of the national and international smartphone makers that have joined the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Earlier this month, Lenovo and Motorola started manufacturing smartphones in India.
