Tamil Nadu Government to provide Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) under Centre’s BharatNet Scheme

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has announced a decision to provide Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) to all households in the state, making use of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence obtained by the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation.

The Centre’s broadband project BharatNet will be launched in the state at affordable costs under the ‘internet for all homes’ policy of the State Government. These services would be provided to every household through the state-owned Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation. The Chief Minister announced the creation of the Rs. 3,000-crore Tamil Nadu Fibernet Corporation to implement the Central government’s Bharatnet scheme to link village panchayats through Optical Fibre.

It was further said that 552 cable operators had been roped in and services were being provided to the people and the ISP Licence will be used to take internet across every household in the state. A total of 12,524 village panchayats from across the State will be connected through Optical fiber so that people in their respective village could avail all the government services through internet. The Chief Minister also added that IPTV will be provided along with hi-speed broadband services and other internet services in the state.
