Twitter planning to remove the 140 character limit for tweets

Last month, Twitter made the decision to remove the 140 word restriction when sending direct messages and it seems that they are considering building a new product that will remove the 140 character limit for tweets as well.

The 140 character word limit has been a trademark of Twitter. It is what makes tweets so interesting as people are able to express their opinions and its straight to the point. However, much like Instagram has now started accepting portrait and landscape photos apart from their trademark 1:1 aspect ratio square photos, it seems that the the plans have been in discussion within Twitter for quite a while.

Twitter has been trying new methods of expanding the limit by allowing people to retweet with comment etc but they might also additionally think of removing links, user handles etc from the character count.

The new product will remove the word restriction that is currently set to 140 characters. We aren’t sure what the new limit will be or whether there will be a new character limit and how it works but there will be people who appreciate it and people who don’t.
