Micromax’s new Canvas 5 isn’t ‘Sliver’ anymore. If you are wondering what it means, then it is that the company has launched its new Canvas flagship smartphone the Canvas 5 on Wednesday at an event in Delhi, and it is seen as the successor of Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 that was launched in June, though Sliver was different category smartphone. We got our hands on the new Canvas 5, and here’s our first impression.
Starting with the build and design of Canvas 5, the smartphone boasts of a metal frame and leather-like back in two colours – Space Grey and Tan Brown. On the front is the 2.5D glass display, which looks attractive. Also, the phone does feel solid and premium in hands. It measures 148 x 73.6 x 8.5 mm, and weighs 143 grams.
The Canvas 5 features a 5.2-inch full-HD 2.5D Glass display with additional Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The display appears quite vibrant and bright with a pixel density of 424ppi and 450 nits brightness.
Inside, the Canvas 5 is powered by a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6753 SoC clocked at 1.3GHz with Mali-T720 GPU. The processor is backed by a 3GB DDR3 RAM. The internal storage on device is 16GB with microSD expansion slot of up to 64GB.
It runs Android 5.1 (Lollipop) out-of-the-box, with slightly tweaked UI on top. Micromax also said that the phone is also upgradable to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), but there is no time frame for the update as yet.
It seems that the UI doesn’t include an app drawer like stock Android, but we will not be able confirm that as of now. We did try to look for an option to enable app drawer, but the media unit didn’t seem to have any. So you will have to wait for our review for more detail on that.
Coming to the cameras, the Canvas 5 has a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash (Samsung 3M2 sensor, and PDAF), and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with selfie LED Flash as well.
The Micromax Canvas 5 is dual-SIM (Micro-SIM) device with support for 4G LTE (Band 3 and Band 40) on SIM 1 and 2G on SIM 2. It includes a non-removable 2900mAh battery that is claimed to deliver 10 hours of talk time and up to 275h of standby time.
The Micromax Canvas 5 is priced at Rs. 11,999 and will be available through all retail stores across India starting today. It also comes with double data offer for Airtel 4G customers for 3 months and 7 day door step service policy. Micromax has also partnered with Bajaj Finance to offer a 12 month EMI scheme, wherein consumers will have to pay 4 advance EMIs at the time of the purchase.
