YouTube is banking on the growing market of virtual reality (VR). The video sharing service from Google is adding support for VR video for its Android app.
“VR video gives you a sense of depth as you look around in every direction. Near things look near, far things look far”, said YouTube in the announcement. It must be noted that YouTube started supporting 360 degree videos since March. Now YouTube videos will have a new Cardboard icon featuring Google’s Cardboard headset that will push users into a VR viewing mode. You can check VR videos like Hunger Games Experience or TOMS Shoes Giving Trip which YouTube points out specifically. Anyone with an Android phone and a Cardboard viewer should be able to get the update and start watching them in the headset.
Moreover, you can now watch any video using Google Cardboard, and experience a kind of virtual movie theater. You will have to select the new “Cardboard” option from the watch page menu and insert your phone into the viewer. You will need to update the YouTube app for Android with the latest version and have a simple Cardboard viewer to experience VR videos. Last month, Google Cardboard added VR support for Street View.
