Reliance Jio and RCOM enter into strategic partnership for 4G services and spectrum sharing

Reliance Jio Infocomm and Reliance Communications Ltd. (RCOM) have entered into a strategic partnership for the sale of 800 MHz spectrum in 9 Circles by RCOM to Reliance Jio, and for sharing of spectrum in 800 MHz band across 17 Circles.

As a result of the strategic collaboration, both the companies have also inked a reciprocal Intra Circle Roaming (“ICR”) deal. This would enable RCom subscribers to use their 4G-enabled handsets on Reliance Jio network. Last month, Reliance Jio launched 4G LTE services for its employees. Through this, Reliance Jio’s access to enhanced spectrum footprint in the 800 MHz band will allow a rollout of 4G-LTE services in new circles. The spectrum arrangements between RJIL and RCOM will result in network synergies, enhanced network capacity and will optimize spectrum utilization and capex efficiencies. Both operators anticipate considerable savings in operating costs and future investment in networks.

The companies said that the arrangements are subject to liberalization of RCOM spectrum in the 800 MHz band and obtaining requisite approvals. According to the companies, these agreements further strengthen the comprehensive framework of business co-operation between Reliance Jio and RCOM group, following the nationwide long term IRU agreements for inter and intra city optical fibre networks and for sharing of telecom tower infrastructure.
