Sony acquires Israeli LTE Modem Chip Technology Innovator – Altair Semiconductor

Sony has announced that it has come to an agreement with Israel based Altair Semiconductor and majority of its shareholders to acquire the company.

The purchase price is US$ 212 million dollars and the acquisition is expected to be complete by February 2016. Altair is a company that is based in Israel and owns modem chip technology and related software for LTE (4G standard) for mobile devices.

Their modem chips are known for their low power consumption, high performance and competitive cost. LTE is becoming more and more widespread and it will play a crucial role in the interconnection of IOT (internet-of-Things) devices as more and more devices are expected to pack cellular chipsets.

Sony plans to expand Altair’s business and also push harder to develop the technology further and innovate.By combining Altair’s chipsets with Sony’s own imaging sensors and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), Sony will be able to develop highly advanced and cellular connected sensing component devices.
