Telegram hits 100M MAU, releases Channels 2.0 with new features

Popular instant messaging app, Telegram has announced that it has crossed 100 million monthly active user mark. The app says that it sees 350,000 new users sign up each day, and is delivering 15 billion messages daily.

Telegram’s USP has been the secure chat feature, which the company claims ensures device level encryption and can’t be read by anyone, including the company. The secret chat lets users set a timer for a chat, and the message gets erased permanently after that fixed time. Besides announcing the 100 million MAUs milestone, Telegram has also released Channels 2.0 with new features and improvements. The app says that each day Channels get 400,000,000 views. Firstly, users can now copy links to individual messages inside a channel using the Quick Share menu. You can send these links to friends outside of Telegram or post them to other social networks. Moving on, the app gets an ability to send silent messages that will not notify your subscribers which is helpful for late night or non-urgent updates. Tap on the bell icon to toggle silent messages on and off.

Next up users can now enable signatures in Channel Info where new messages will be signed with the posting admin’s chosen screen name but will not link to their profile. You can even edit your messages after they are posted by simply tapping the message and then pressing ‘Edit’. This feature works with supergroups and channels because they both use the same underlying technology. The latest update also makes it easy for Channels to share the links, pictures and videos you get from bots.  Finally, sticker previews now work everywhere including sticker suggestions when you type an emoji and the ‘Add stickers’ screen.
