Earlier this week WhatsApp rolled out end-to-end encryption across all its communication, which has been developed in collaboration with Open Whisper Systems since 2014. Now Open Whisper Systems has released public beta of its desktop app, Signal Private Messenger on the Chrome Store, after several months of private beta testing through its invitation program.
Signal Private Messenger was released for iOS and Android platforms back in 2014. The desktop app has been improved based on feedback from users and the UI has also been updated throughout the beta program to improve the look and feel of the app, said the company. Currently the desktop app syncs only with the Android app.
Similar to WhatsApp, Signal uses your existing phone number and address book, so there is no separate logins, usernames, or PINs. The development team is supported by community donations and grants, so the app is completely free and doesn’t include advertisements. It is also open source, and the code is available on GitHub.
