YouTube mobile apps get revamped homepage and improved recommendations

YouTube has updated its mobile apps on Android and iOS with a revamped homepage and other UI tweaks as well. Both the apps are getting a visual overhaul for its homefeed.

The aim of the makeover is to push easier discovery of the content on YouTube. With the latest update, you can see larger thumbnails for recommended videos, which YouTube says is curated based on deep neural network technology. This technology analyzes and follows your likes and patterns. To offer you better recommendations, YouTube will go through your subscriptions and watch history through machine learning systems.YouTube claims that it is recommending hundreds of millions of different videos on Home, billions of times, in 76 languages everyday.

Instead of text, YouTube is focusing on large high-resolution thumbnails that also feature the video creators evidently by showing profile icons underneath each video.

YouTube product managers Brian Marquardt and Todd Beaupré wrote in a blog post,

One of the biggest improvements is how the system suggests more recent videos and those from the creators you love. People who have tried the new system have spent more time watching fresh videos and content from their Subscriptions.
