According to a Forbes report by analyst Patrick Moorhead, Intel is reworking its mobile SoC strategy and will no longer produce smarthphone chips code-named SoFIA and Broxton.
As a part of a new strategy, company has cancelled SoFIA 3GX, SoFIA LTE, SoFIA LTE2, and Broxton platforms with immediate effect, confirmed Intel’s spokesperson to Anandtech in an email statement that reads:
“I can confirm that the changes included canceling the Broxton platform as well as SoFIA 3GX, SoFIA LTE and SoFIA LTE2 commercial platforms to enable us to move resources to products that deliver higher returns and advance our strategy. These changes are effective immediately.”
Intel in partnership with Rockchip in 2014 started developing SoFIA, and discontinuing the platform doesn’t end the alliance with Rockchip. Notably, SoFIA is already shipping but the Broxton chips were due to ship this year and had gotten delayed. Furthermore, the spokesperson suggested that the resources originally dedicated to Broxton and SoFIA chips will be moved to products that deliver higher returns and helps Intel to advance its strategy.
